“David’s course was excellent. The teaching was dynamic and tailored to the needs and progress of the group. It was great to be taught by an experienced professional working in the industry.” Dominee Reid, participant January 2009

An advanced 2-week workshop led by Production Designer David McHenry with the emphasis on creative design and in-depth technical drawing. This course will take place at Elstree Studios.

Introduction

In film and TV production the pre-production process is a time for discovery and invention. This is when the production designer and the art department develop ideas and create the blueprints for the design of the piece.
In this intensive course, experienced Production Designer David McHenry explores this creative journey and helps participants to develop their individual creative design approach from first initial ideas to final visuals, plans and models.

Building on our introductory course Technical Drawing for Film and TV, the aim is to offer participants the tools and the support to develop and progress their skills to the next level in the art department.

Course Outline

Participants will be sent a film script in advance of the course, which they will be asked to read in its entirety before focusing in on one particular scene.
They will then prepare by sourcing visual research material in response to the first reading. This can include ideas for furnishing, colour, fabrics, texture and architecture.

Over two intensive weeks participants will analyse the screenplay, focusing on one major set, and develop a unique design concept of their own. Under the guidance of David McHenry participants will produce working drawings, plans, visuals and models which they can present as part of their portfolio.

A screening of the film will conclude the course, allowing final assessment of each participant’s development.

Fee: £650
