Post Production Sound: A Masterclass with Steve Haynes

Introduction

Aimed at any filmmaker who needs a comprehensive overview of the post-production sound process, this 1-day masterclass will cover specific areas of sound design for film, TV and film commercials. Participants will also gain an insight into mixing for TV or feature film drama and documentary, including recording ADR with actors.

Steve Haynes is an audio engineer with 40 years experience in film and TV post-production sound, mixing and ADR. His most recent credits include SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (Danny Boyle, 2008), HUNGER (Steve McQueen, 2008), ATONEMENT (Joe Wright, 2007) and Channel Four’s RED RIDING trilogy.

Course Content

Topics will cover the A-Z of the post production process, and include:

  • Why post produce the sound? - What are the factors that make it necessary?
  • The dialogue tracklay - What are the responsibilities of the dialogue editor?
  • The sound design tracklay - What is meant by “sound design”?
  • The effects tracklay - Is there a difference between effects and “sound design”?
  • ADR - What is it? Why do we do it? Do actors like it?
  • Foley or foots and moves – How does it help?
  • Voice over or Narration - How do we record and mix it?
  • The Final Mix - including the difference between source and score music.
  • Delivering the final mix to the audience - How can we give the audience an aural experience?
  • Deliverable items - What are they and why do we need them?
