Working on Film: The Director/Actor Collaboration
Duration: 2 days
Capacity: Max. 10 participants
We’ve teamed up with the The Actors Centre for a special edition of Tim Fywell’s immensely popular Director/Actor Collaboration workshop.
Tim Fywell is one of the most experienced directors working in TV drama, in the UK and internationally. Working across TV and feature films, he has worked with a host of accomplished actors including Daniel Craig, Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen, Stellan Skarsgård, Sarah Lancashire and Helena Bonham-Carter.
In this NEW collaborative workshop ten directors will have the chance to experience Tim’s unique approaches to acting and directing firsthand. The workshop will bring actors and new directors together to collaborate and understand the process of creating work for film, from both sides of the camera.
You will alternately give and take direction, working in mixed groups of actors from The Actors Centre and directors from LFS, through a series of practical script-based exercises. You will then be put into groups to work through a piece supplied by the director. You will be given time to rehearse these pieces and put what you've learned into action, before they are filmed.
The course will examine the director-actor relationship in terms of the script, the character, and the shooting process. It will explore how the director and actor can work together to achieve a higher degree of characterisation and immediacy. It will also explore ways to re-set the approach if an actor is missing the notes, or the director is not providing useful feedback. You will leave with a better understanding of what is required from the role of actor and director, and how to approach work on film. You will also have the opportunity to work with emerging and established actors and film directors.
The workshop will conclude with an informal showing of the filmed scenes and Q&A with Tim Fywell in the evening. This will be followed by an opportunity to network with your fellow actors and directors over drinks.
NOTE: The workshop will take place at The Actors Centre, 1A Tower St, London WC2H 9NP.
Feeback from Tim's previous workshops
"A perfectly pitched opportunity to learn skills as a director that you might rarely be able to practice –without any consequences, at least. A good opportunity to meet other directors and to get a feel of the real working practices of a working director. Thanks Tim for a great learning experience." Myrna, participant March 2015
"In broadcast rehearsal, time is a luxury; you need to be able to get the performance you want from your actors in the twenty minutes it takes your crew to set up. Tim showed us how to work with a fast turnaround, how to allow the actors room to bring their own ideas, how to prep very quickly and resolve any issues with both script and performance." Farah, participant March 2015
