The Song of the Rain

The Song of the Rain

A teenage girl, Begaim, lives in a small village in Kyrgyzstan, close to Lake Issyk-Kul. She recently married, but her husband left shortly after the wedding to work as an illegal immigrant in Russia. She is heavily pregnant, and lives as a servant with her husband's grandmother, Napisa, in a village where most of the men leave to find work overseas, like thousands of women living in the harsh conditions of post-Soviet Central Asia.
