London Film School celebrates 70 years at Dinard Film Festival

By Holly Blake

As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, London Film School was proud to take part in this year’s Dinard Festival of British and Irish Film, strengthening the school’s long-standing connections with the international film community and showcasing the work of its students and alumni to audiences in France.

A highlight of the festival programme was a special 90-minute screening dedicated to London Film School’s 70-year history. The curated selection brought together films that demonstrate the breadth of storytelling, creativity and talent that have emerged from the school across decades of filmmaking.

The programme featured:

  • The Birthday
  • Come Dancing
  • Free Time
  • Green Man Yellow Woman
  • 21st Century Nuns
  • House
  • London 7565
  • Abracadabra

Together, these films offered audiences an insight into the diverse voices, artistic approaches and international perspectives that continue to define London Film School and its community.

The school’s participation extended beyond the screening programme. LFS Director Chris Auty took part in a special industry discussion alongside Damien Stein and Julien Henocq, lecturers at ESRA. The event brought together representatives from two leading film schools to explore the realities of film education and professional integration for emerging filmmakers.

The discussion examined the challenges and opportunities facing new generations entering the screen industries. It provided a valuable forum for French and British educators to exchange perspectives on an evolving industry, from changing production models and career pathways to the ambitions and aspirations of young creative talent.

For London Film School, the event reflected the school’s ongoing commitment to preparing filmmakers for successful careers in an increasingly international industry. It also demonstrated the importance of collaboration between institutions, industry professionals and festivals in creating opportunities for the next generation of storytellers.

Participation in Dinard formed a fitting part of London Film School’s 70th anniversary year. Founded in 1956, the school has spent seven decades supporting filmmakers from around the world, fostering creative talent and championing independent voices. The special screening and industry dialogue offered an opportunity not only to celebrate that legacy, but also to look ahead to the future of film education and filmmaking itself.

As London Film School continues its anniversary celebrations throughout the year, the school’s presence at Dinard served as a reminder of the enduring value of international cultural exchange and the vital role film schools play in shaping the future of cinema.
