SketchUp is a 3D modeling software that has become an industry standard in the art department. SketchUp allows quick alterations and easy collaborations between members of the department to design a set that works for everyone. It allows for the department to see the work in progress even if they can’t be in the office, meaning that changes can be made to accommodate everyone’s needs. For the person using Sketchup, it means greater versatility and more speed as models and drawings can be worked on while on location or at home if needed, and emailed instantly over to whoever requires them.
Physical models are often still required alongside the SketchUp models in order to show the director or DoP, but having the SketchUp model means you can quickly try out alterations, easily show different colours and textures, show details very accurately and easily collaborate with other members of the department. It also means you are in a good position to quickly transfer the models into drawings.
Join art director Tamsin Gandhi for a guided tutorial of SketchUp. By the end of this workshop you will understand how to produce a simple model of a set from a rough designer's sketch, for use as part of the design process.
