APRIL | STUDENT AND ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS

As we kick start the final summer terms many of our students will be coming towards the end of their time with LFS but the work we see from those students is uncompromisingly brilliant showing their hard work and talent. Our alumni too, continue to achieve fantastic successes across the industry, working with each other and securing their place in the industry. Read on to see what’s been happening over the last month.

Brilliant to hear from David Ford (MAS 0918) whose play, Brief Candle will be premiering at Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer. Taking place at the prestigious Surgeons Hall venue at the heart of the festival. The play is set in the underground slum of Edinburgh Old Town and uses the backdrop of the night of the Great Fire of Edinburgh in 1824 to critique the authorities of the world's inaction to the climate emergency. David is crowdfunding to raise funds for the play here and you can get tickets for the play here.

More news from Cannes as we were delighted to see that former filmmaking student, Amanda Nell Eu’s (MAF 170) film, Tiger Stripes has also been selected. The selection marks a historic moment as the first female director from Malaysia to be invited to the festival.

More news from Cannes as Antonio Sequeira (MAF 192) will be showcasing his feature film. Autumn, as part of the Goes to Cannes programme of Marché du Film. The film was selected as one of the films in Talinn Black Nights Film Festival. Read more about it here.

 

Congratulations to MAIFB grad, Luis Kelly (MAIFB8) who has been working a series called Ready Set StartUP, a new entrepreneurial competition series where early-stage entrepreneurs with exciting business ideas compete to win an investment and business support. The series had its premiere screening at the MIPTV 2023 opening night party, on 18th April in Cannes.

Grad Film Highlights April 2023

We are absolutely thrilled to share again that Talking to the River will have its world premiere at the Director's Fortnight at Cannes 2023 in May. The selection for Talking To The River for grad, Yue Pan is an incredible achievement as the festival is open to professional as well as non-professional filmmakers. Yue is in the same selection as established filmmakers such as Michel Gondry and Cédric Kahn. The selection marks the second consecutive year that a grad film has featured at Cannes following Masha Novikova’s, Glorious Revolution last year. Huge congratulations to the team! In addition, in the Marche Sun Sets on Beirut is being shown for “Coopmed #1”, a market screening of Mediterranean short films. Writer-Dir: Daniela Stephan, Prod: Yuanhao Song.

On Your Behalf continues to do well and has a busy May screening at Big Apple Film Festival (USA), LOCO (UK) and at Red Movie Awards where was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design, with Special mention: Best Actor (Kevin McNally)'. Wri-Dir: Ana Garcia Rico, Editor: John Powell, Prod: Maya Wills.

Also screening at LOCO London Comedy Film Festival (UK) was black comedy Sucking Diesel (Dir-Wri: Sam McGrath).

Pour Mon Fils will be screening at CORTI DA SOGNI - Intl Short Film Festival 2023 (Italy) and at National Film Festival For Talented Youth 2023 (USA). Dir-Writer: Mathilde Jouaud, DoP: Pablo Garrido Carreras, Prod.Desig: Mahee Merica,

Your Guardian was awarded Special Jury Prize at  Martovski Festival (Serbia). Director: Mimi Vlaovic, Prod: Anastasia Savinova

Fastnet Film Festival (UK) just announced its programme, which includes Unders (Writer-Director: Bert Dijkstra, Prod. Designer: Abigail Quinlan) and On Your Behalf.

Herbert & Humphrey has been selected in LA Comedy 2023 (USA). Dir-Writer: Siddarth Joshi, Prod: Antonio Donato, DoP: Sahil Kotwani, Prod. Desig: Anastasiya Mykhaylova, Art Dir: Kelly Diapère.

Three grad films screened at new Beeston Film Festival (UK) Unders, Your Guardian and Bona Vacantia (Dir: Shezah Salam, Prod: Rhys Holland, DoP: Nizah Elias, Prod. Design: Abigail Quinlan, Sound Recordist: Tzu Hsuan Chao).


We’ve just caught up with beautiful sibling drama Incense and Cigarettes which screened at Tokyo Shorts (Japan), awarded Best Female Student Director & Best Women Empowerment Film, and Shangai Indie Film Fest, awarded Best Actress & Best Drama in 2022. Dir: Lingge Dong, DoP: Hangshuo Zhang.
