AUGUST | STUDENT AND ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS

After an eventful School year, August tends to be a little quieter for LFS but students, alumni and staff have been just as busy as ever this month with exciting projects, a wealth of achievements and preparations for the new School term.

We’re hugely proud that MA Screenwriting alumnus, Ameir Brown, signed with The Agency, has been part of the writing team A Thousand Blows, a new project from Steven Knight and Stephen Graham. Ameir has been working with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, one of the most respected names in British TV, for the Disney+ UK original series set in the world of illegal boxing in 1880s Victorian London. Based on real-life figures and stories, Ameir worked with a group of writers including Insook Chappell, Harlan Davies and Yasmin Joseph, all led by Steven Knight. We can’t wait to hear more about it.

We’re delighted to hear that Mo Abudu will be commencing filming on two short film projects shortly, taking on a new role as director. Mo, who took part in an LFS short course is a hugely successful producer having founded EbonyLife, a pan-African TV service in 2013. In her directorial debut Mo will direct, Her Perfect Life and Iyawo Mi (My Wife), a predominantly Yoruba language film and will lead filmmaking process for the first time.

We’re really proud that Tony Ukpo, MA Filmmaking alumnus, has achieved great success securing not just one but three features on Apple TV. Aliceville, Mum, Dad, Meet Sam, and Random 11, all directed by Tony have been selected to be available on the streaming giant. Tony was also the writer on Aliceville and Random 11 and we’re delighted that his works are getting to such a huge audience.

Staff member and former student Chi Yu saw his work featured following a collaboration between LFS, the English National Ballet and artist, Rana Begum. Chi captured Rana’s installation, No.1104 Catching Colour, at London City Island. Choreographed by English National Ballet's Associate Choreographer, Stina Quagebeur the performance was developed in direct response to the work. As the Venice Film festival gets started, we want to wish good luck to all the LFS alumni and former staff whose work will be included. LFS alumnus, Oliver Hermanus is screening his film, Living, former student, Roberto De Paolis is premiering Princess and Hanging Gardens has been recognised in the Horizons Extra category, having been written and directed by former student, Yassin Al Daradji, and co-produced and co-written by LFS tutor and Visiting Lecturer, Margaret Glover.
