Bobbie Peers receiving the Palme d'Or
For the first time Norway had four films in official selections at the Cannes International Film Festival – and for the first time Norway celebrated Palm Sunday on the Côte d’Azur, as Bobbie Peers’ Norwegian short, Sniffer, won the country’s first Palme d’Or of the festival.Starring Danny Schlesinger and Kristin Krogh Sissner, and shot on locations and in studios in Bergen.
SNIFFER is set in a society devoid of sunlight and open sky. The law of gravity is out of order – everyone can fly, and accordingly carry gravitation boots to anchor themselves to the ground. But one day a man has had enough - he quits his job, loosens his bindings, and takes off.
Produced by Maria Ekerhovd and Glenn Gardner for Bergen’s Dream Factory, Sniffer was launched at Norway’s Tromsø International Film Festival earlier this year. A graduate from the London International Film School, Peers has worked as a scriptwriter and illustrator since 1999.Norway has twice before been represented in the short film competition at Cannes, both by Jens Lien (Døren som ikke smakk/Shut the Door/2000 and Naturlige briller/Natural Glasses/2001). Sniffer will be released theatrically in Norway on Friday, 30 June, by Arthaus, with Australian director Sarah Watt’s Look Both Ways.
