PRESS RELEASE – October 4, 2010
Brian Udoff (MA Filmmaking '07) received the 2010 Emerging Cinematographers Award in Los Angeles, CA on September 26. The event was held at the Directors Guild of America Theater on Sunset Boulevard. Steven Poster, ASC, US president of the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) hosted the evening and a cocktail reception followed.
Udoff received the award for Les Mouches (2008) a 26-minute London Film School graduation short, directed by Leon Yan. It was shot in 35mm on location in England and France. "I wanted London to have an ugly look, because the character doesn't want to live there anymore," Udoff shares. "I used varying intensities of blue-gray filters on the lens to give daytime exteriors in London a washed-out feeling, and low pressure sodium vapor lamps in certain night situations to reproduce the monochromatic look of streetlights. I also used the Arri Varicon system for in-camera flashing combined with bleach bypass 'pull 1' processing for night scenes to retain details in the shadows. I feel lucky and surprised to receive this recognition. It means a lot to me."
Eight aspiring cinematographers were recipients of the 14th Annual Emerging Cinematographers Awards, an honor given by the ICG to recognize members who have not yet reached the status of Director of Photography. Producer/director/actor Kevin Smith offered some introductory remarks for the evening, describing his experience with and reliance on his cinematographers, particularly David Klein, his friend and Director of Photography on many of his films.
Prior to attending LFS, Brian Udoff graduated from Johns Hopkins University’s Film and Media Studies Program (B.A.’03) in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He is currently working on the TV series Undercovers, airing on NBC.
