Neshat’s videography projects Turbulent and Rapture won the prestigious International Award at the XLVIII Venice Biennale. In 2009 she won the Silver Lion for best director at the 66thVenice Film Festival for her feature directorial debut, Women Without Men.
The Workshop is being offered free of charge. Ten participants will be recruited through competitive application. The selection panel includes representatives from the arts and film sectors. The deadline for applications is Monday 30th September at 12.00 pm.
The programme incorporates four public events: a joint interview with Neshat and artist Isaac Julien on 22nd October at the Barbican Cinema 1, a screening of Neshat’s short works and experimental films on 24th October at the Courtauld Institute of Art, a screening of Neshat’s feature film Women Without Men and a presentation of the films created by the Workshop participants (dates and locations to be confirmed).
Ben Gibson, Director of the London Film School said “This Workshop brings together the aesthetic and narrative concerns of the fine arts and filmmaking, exploring a space the School wants to occupy and understand. It’s hard to think of anyone better to lead us on the journey than Shirin Neshat, an artist whose subtlety and openness have allowed her to make us see and comprehend in new ways – in cinemas and in galleries.”
Vali Mahlouji, independent curator, said “Visual artists have engaged with cinema from the outset and Shirin Neshat’s practice straddles the worlds of art and cinema giving us an opportunity to explore the fluid boundaries between these forms.”
