London Film School alumni shine at Cannes 2025

We’re thrilled to share the exciting news that two of our distinguished alumni, Carla Simón and Oliver Hermanus, have been officially selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival – a momentous achievement that highlights their extraordinary talent and the continued impact of London Film School on the world stage.

Carla Simón, whose deeply personal and lyrical storytelling first captured global attention with Summer 1993, and her award-winning film Alcarràs, returns to Cannes with her latest feature, Romería – a poignant exploration of identity, memory, and community. Her work has long been celebrated for its sensitivity and authenticity, and we’re incredibly proud to see her voice once again recognised at one of the world’s most prestigious festivals.

Oliver Hermanus, known for his powerful visual style and masterful direction in films such as Moffie and Living, brings a bold new project to Cannes that promises to provoke conversation and push boundaries. The History of Sound marks yet another chapter in a career defined by fearless creativity and social relevance.

Both Carla and Oliver represent the spirit of LFS: courageous, innovative, and deeply committed to storytelling that matters. Their journeys from here in Covent Garden to the red carpets of Cannes inspire our entire community – from current students finding their voice, to fellow alumni continuing to forge new paths across the global film landscape.

At LFS, we take pride in being a home for filmmakers who work tirelessly to bring their visions to life. The Cannes selections are not only a testament to Carla and Oliver’s talent and dedication, but also to the collaborative, international, and artistically rigorous environment that defines the LFS experience.

We’ll be cheering them on as they take their place among cinema’s finest at Cannes 2025. Congratulations, Carla and Oliver – your LFS family is incredibly proud!
