This documentary film club offers weekly filmmaking activities for young people led by filmmakers of the London Film School. In this practical course students will learn about documentary filmmaking, create their own filmed exercises and discuss their work with peers. We provide resources to help them learn from other filmmakers and be inspired by their techniques.

Students should come away feeling confident in themselves as a visual storyteller and understand the basic tools of storytelling using images and sound whilst developing their own ideas for future projects. This is a unique opportunity to explore documentary filmmaking and gain new knowledge and insights into technical film skills.

We recommend that students take this course after completing the filmmaking programme.

EXTENDED FEEDBACK:

"It is an excellent creative outlet for students who can explore, make mistakes, try again without the feeling of failure - self-confidence has been a major barrier to many students. It is great to provide a simple brief of what to do and let the children have a go - often creating wonderful things that as a teacher I wouldn't have even though about! It creates a really lovely dialogue about the child's learning and they can have complete ownership over their project; explain why they chose to do something in a particular way/use a specific technique. I really enjoyed discussing the children's films with them and would love to incorporate this more into my teaching!" Teacher

"(The tutor) was incredible at hosting the club - she made the children feel so at ease, excited and engaged with film making. I was also told that it was great to learn from a person who 'had a real job and could make actual films for real life' which made me laugh a lot! But it was great to have an expert share their knowledge with the children and make film making be relevant and purposeful for the children," Teacher.
