A Practical Introduction to Location Sound: Recording and Mixing

This intensive weekend workshop with Joel Cahen is designed to introduce filmmakers to the fundamental techniques for recording and mixing sound for film, television, documentary and video. Aimed at those who feel they would benefit from a theoretical and practical grounding in location sound techniques, participants will be taught how to achieve the most professional results using the equipment most widely-used in the industry today. Making the Grade: An Introduction to Colour Grading & Finishing

This 2-day workshop with Kevin Shaw is aimed at anyone who has ever thought about grading, but not yet had the opportunity to explore its potential. Anyone with an interest in colour correction may attend; whether a colourist, or a filmmaker working with a colourist. We welcome producers and directors, as well as cinematographers, editors, DITs, VFX artists and Colourists – basically anyone who has (or will have) a project to grade, and who wants to make the most of postproduction and get beautiful images to fit the budget.
Day one topics include:
* Introduction: What does a colourist do? Is grading a technical necessity?
* Grading Workflows: When to colour and what to expect.
* The differences between Film, Video and Digital Colourists: Can it always be fixed in post?
* Effects of Colour: Examples of correction, enhancement and effects
* Getting Started: What are the essential tools needed?
* Taking It Further: A professional approach.
* Grading Suites and Theatres: When should you use them? Are they all the same?
Day two will concentrate on two very different case studies; a big budget feature film shot on Red, Phantom and DSLR cameras, and a low budget short shot on 16mm film. More info.

Technical Drawing for Film & Television
Wed 5th - Sat 15th December 2012 - £1,250
This intensive 10-day programme with David McHenry covers all aspects of traditional hand drafting for film and television.
The course is specifically designed to cater for a variety of levels. There will be a maximum of 6-8 participants, and the primary aim is to develop each student’s abilities and build confidence in precisely those areas where they are needed. An organic process of learning without a rigid timetable allows each participant to work entirely at his or her own pace. Under tutor David McHenry’s guidance, each participant will receive the one-to-one assistance they need to make the most of their time with us. More info.

Improvisation for Directors in Film & TV: Intensive 5-Day Course
Mon 17th - Fri 21st December 2012 - £480
This intensive 5-day workshop with Sean McCann is designed specifically for directors and writer/directors who would like to use improvisation as a central component of their work, and who would benefit from workshopping a current project with professional actors. The course is highly practical in nature, and all participants will be encouraged to 'learn on their feet' through active involvement in the various improvisation techniques examined. Key areas covered include:
* How to get actors to improvise successfully.
* Improvisation using pre-existing material.
* Improvisation from scratch.
* Improvisation as a rehearsal technique AND Improvisation as part of the final shooting script.

By the end of the week, participants will have a deep working knowledge of the fundamentals of improvisational practice, and will have applied their knowledge in numerous rehearsal settings. More info.
