Variety reports that award-winning South African director Oliver Hermanus is once again teaming up with his French producing and distributing partner Didier Costet from Swift to make a US$5m biblical thriller.

The Well will be an English-language international co-production and will reportedly shed light on the complex relationship between Judas and Jesus. According to Variety Hermanus is currently polishing the script.

Hermanus has described it to Channel24 as his most ambitious film project to date, and has said that the cast and crew will be more international than his previous productions.

Hermanus’ previous film Skoonheid was South Africa’s official entry into the 2012 Oscars category for Best Foreign Film and was selected for the Cannes International Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section in 2011, where it won the Queer Palm Award during the festival.

His debut feature film, Shirley Adams, won the best feature film award at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS) and scooped the Best South African Feature Film and Best First Feature Film awards at the Durban International Film Festival in 2009.
